How my daughter’s fiancĂ© bathed her with acid

The motive behind the acid bath of 22-year-old Chika Egbo by her estranged lover, David Sulaimon, remains elusive, but one thing is sure, the victim may not remain the same again.
Chika is a student of the Enugu State College of Education.
Last Tuesday, when our correspondent visited her at the Burns Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Egbo has become a shadow of the beautiful girl she was. The substance Sulaimon allegedly poured on her had destroyed every visible skin from her chest upwards.

She mumbled to her father, a Taraba State-based businessman, as she could neither see nor speak properly at the time.
When her father, Matthew Egbo, narrated the incident that led to Chika’s state, the story brought tears to his eyes as he lamented that his daughter would never be normal again.
Matthew said, “In March 2011, someone who identified himself as Lekan Sulaimon called me, asking for my daughter’s hand in marriage. We talked a lot and I promised to speak with Chika on the issue.
“My daughter later told me he was the boy she was in love with and said she had resolved to marry him.”
After much discussion, Matthew told Sulaimon to bring his parents for proper introduction, but the suitor said his father was ill and needed to be taken abroad for treatment. He also said his mother was abroad.
Matthew said, “On the June 25 date that we agreed on, Sulaimon brought seven men and four women dressed in Yoruba attire to my hometown, Enugu, where we held the introduction.
“But around November last year, my wife travelled from Taraba to Enugu and Chika told her she was pregnant.”
According to Matthew, Chika told her parents they should not be alarmed since she and Sulaiman had agreed to get married.
Chika was instructed to go to Lagos and tell Sulaiman’s relations about the pregnancy.
But when she got back from Lagos, Chika told her father that she discovered that most of what Sulaiman had told her about his parents were lies.
Matthew explained, “For instance, Chika discovered that Sulaimon’s father was hale and hearty. The father told her he was not aware of any plans by his son to get married.
“She also learnt that the mother was not abroad too. She visited her and she told us the woman received her well and even expressed joy that his son had found someone to marry.
“But after the visit, we heard nothing from neither Sulaimon nor his parents until after my daughter gave birth to a baby girl on May 4.
Our correspondent learnt that Chika had broached the idea of abortion to her parents, as she told them it was apparent that the man she was in love with had lied to her all along.
Matthew forbade her to consider abortion. After the baby was born, Chika was said to have informed Sulaimon, but he gave series of excuses why he could not visit her.
He reportedly told her he was facing some challenges and did not have the wherewithal to take care of the baby at the moment.
After a few months, Chika’s baby girl was weaned and taken to Taraba to live with Matthew and his wife.
The Egbos said they took the decision to take the baby off their daughter’s hands so that she could continue her study.
PUNCH Metro learnt that in November, Sulaimon began to request that he needed to see his baby, but Matthew told him to bring his parents to come and iron things out.
Chika was said to have insisted she did not want to have anything to do with the young man anymore.
But on November 5, Chika travelled to Lagos after Sulaimon had informed her that his mother wanted to see her. The unsuspecting girl left Enugu without informing her parents.
“My phone just rang that day and I was told to come to Lagos because a young man had poured acid on my daughter,” Chika’s father said.
Matthew said the message came as  a rude shock since he was not aware his daughter went to Lagos. He explained that the police were the ones who got his number from her phone.
He said,“What I learnt was that when she arrived Igando, Lagos, Sulaimon met her and she demanded that he should take her to his mother who wanted to see her.
“What we gathered from the little she could mumble to us was that Sulaimon went behind a house and as they were about to pick an okada to his mother’s house, he brought out a polythene.
“But when they stopped at a point and Chika thought they were going to proceed to his mother’s house, he just opened a container in the polythene he was carrying and emptied its content on her head.
“She told us when she realised that what Sulaimon poured on her had began eating into her skin, she raised the alarm and called for help.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that passersby and sympathisers, who had been alerted to the young woman’s plight, pursued the fleeing Sulaimon. He was caught and taken to Ikotun Police Station.
“Till now, I still don’t know why he did what he did,” Matthew said.
Divisional Police Officer of Ikotun, Mr. Augustin Akika, confirmed the incident, but said the suspect had been transferred to the state Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba.

Florida Woman Edwarda O'bara Dies After 42 Years In Coma

A woman who lived in a coma for 42 years, meticulously cared for by her family, died Wednesday in her home in Miami Gardens, Fla., the Miami Herald reported.

Edwarda O’Bara was a 16-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes medication and slipped into a diabetic coma.
According to the Herald, just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never did.
Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter — reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin and given nourishment through a feeding tube — until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over.

The family’s story inspired the 2001 book, "A Promise Is A Promise: An Almost Unbelievable Story of a Mother’s Unconditional Love and What It Can Teach Us" and a song called "My Blessed Child," and it prompted people from around the world to travel to her Florida home.
"She taught me so much, and I’m talking about now, after she was in the coma," Colleen O’Bara told the Herald. "She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. She taught me about patience that I didn’t have before."

In an announcement of Edwarda's death posted Thursday on a website dedicated to her, Colleen O'Bara wrote: "Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly at me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen. She then closed her eyes and joined my Mom in Heaven."

Edwarda O’Bara was 59. A memorial is scheduled for Tuesday.

Obasanjo Builds N350M Mosque And Arabic School In Abeokuta - Islam for Muslims

Obasanjo To Build A N350m Ultra-modern Mosque, Arabic School In Abeokuta

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday laid the foundation of a N350,000,000 (three hundred and fifty million naira) ultra-modern central mosque and Arabic school within the premises of his Presidential Library in Oke-Mosan Abeokuta.

Sources say Obasanjo decided to construct a mosque within the premises of the controversial Presidential Library so as to make the place look international and as well erase the impression that he hates northerners and Islam.

The source said further that four governors in the north held a closed door meeting with Obasanjo before the event where they discussed 2015 election and how President Goodluck Jonathan would be either convinced or stopped from re-contesting to pave way for a Northerner as the next President.

The four Northern governors that were present at the foundation laying and fund raising of Olusegun Obasanjo Baytus Salam central Mosque are Kebbi; Usman Dakingari, Kano State; Rabi Kwakwanso, Sokoto; Aliyu Wamakko, Katsina state governor; Sheu-Shemma Shetima who was represented by his deputy. Each of them donated N20 million for the construction of the mosque.

Others who contributed to the Obasanjo’s mosque and arabic school were the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal who pledged N2 million, Chairman of Dangote group of companies ,Alhaji Aliko Dangote who promised N25 million, former governor of Kebbi State, Senator Adamu Aleru who pledged N10 million.

Former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki also pledged N2 million while former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar also sent a sum of five million naira pledge towards the construction of the mosque.

Also the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi donated N5 million.

Other States that contributed to the construction of the mosque were Adamawa, Niger, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kogi, Kwara and Ogun States which all sent their pledges of N20 million each through the Sokoto state governor.

Speaking at the gathering, Obasanjo, a Christian of the Baptist faith himself, urged Nigerians to have religious tolerance and be accommodating, one to another. “I believe that the more you know your God, the better you will be able to serve him,” Obasanjo said.

Cocaine in unthinkable packages

Nigerians were recently stunned when some neatly packed and appetising roasted chickens, which had arrived the country from Brazil, aboard a Turkish Airline flight from Sao Paulo, were discovered to contain hard drugs.  The drugs were concealed in the roasted chickens, with the intention to fool security officials. It was a new way drug traffickers devised to pull the wool on the eyes of security personnel at the airport and bring in hard drugs.
The kingpin of the drugs syndicate, Mr. Vincent Chegini Chinweuwa, had revealed that it took three days to package the roasted chickens for onward transmission to Nigeria, adding: “I was confident that the drug will not be detected. I’m surprised I’ve been caught.” A conservative estimate of the street value of the drugs, which was impounded, was put at about N24 million.

Airport Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, Mr. Hamza Umar, had said of this: “We discovered 2.655kg of cocaine inside roasted chickens.  It is a remarkable seizure because no one would have imagined cocaine worth several millions inside roasted chickens.”

Investigation revealed that drug traffickers have, indeed, devised various new ways to bring in their merchant of death into the country. Sometimes, they are caught. Some other times, they succeed in beating the security dragnet at the airports and borders.

Speaking on this, Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said: “Drug barons are becoming more and more sophisticated in drug concealment, as recent discoveries show.  The essence of drug concealment is to avoid detection and seizure.  In order to prevent huge financial losses, arrests and prosecution, drug barons go the extra mile in hiding their drugs.

The extra mile

with Charly Boy

Life is unpredictable, life has a twisted sense of humour, and life is a driver with a bad attitude; life is a long lonely river. When it dries up, the show is over. When it stagnates, like our capital territory’s man made pond beside the bridge to Gwarimpa, it loses its appeal, and when it rushes, as it will, into the bigger ocean, it merges into the force of similitude, the imprisoning source of all equivalence, forever.
This is your boy, Charly, at the watchtower, hailing all you small and mighty ogas. This week, for me, is cast in a retrospective mould, because I’m like you; I want to know what makes one’s life different from another, what makes America different from Nigeria, and what makes selected dictators different from the democratic elect. I want to laugh in the face of history, our antagonistic nemesis, by remaining a living proof, of how we can break away from the strong hold of ignominy.
The bottom line is that life is like a boxer in the ring; it keeps coming at you with sucker punches. You get to duck, swerve, take it as it comes until you drop from your place of glory or fight back. Most of us fight back, because the human genealogy is made like that; we are programmed to overcome; we are engineered to stretch our endurance to that breaking point and beyond, which is why we can hope, for 50 years in the darkness, still expecting daylight. Going the extra mile means a lot of things to some people, but to me, it’s what distinguishes the sands from the mountains.
My friends; I am a conqueror; I don’t know how to give up. This doesn’t mean that I stand feet apart atop Kilimanjaro and beat my chest twenty-four-seven. No! Actually it’s more than hard work; it’s more than good luck; heck, it’s a hustlers unending war. Of course, it should be much more, because bulldozers, like me, don’t wear our badges as we do cool clothes. Our badges are like scars, like historical landmarks, there’s no washing or taking them off. Going the extra mile, to a lot of people, means a sacrifice they just can’t make.
It’s risky, for a political hound dog to go against the policies of the other goons in the caucus, especially when it will spell his expulsion from the land of milk and honey, but if and when he weighs the balance, and takes into consideration the effect his disloyal position has on the general populace, if and when he factors into his get richer equation the greater benefit of the nation, which puts so much trust in his sorry hide, and if and when he decides that he would rather see the advent of real progress in the back seat of a beetle, than shamefully face a people’s steady decline at the wheel of a custom made jaguar, then he is going the extra mile with his hope for a better future.
Yes, my friends, sometimes it means having no friends, because you might be required to go against the trend, and that has always been one of the defining attributes of a new era.  It’s obviously something that we haven’t seen before, this new era. We are wowed by the possibilities, thrust into the next level with amazing ease, yes o; light can shine on without blinking, without ceasing, without going on a three week vacation, without higher taxes or higher charges, without the biting fangs of capitalism’s market strategies. I believe; the question is; do you? Do you think you can make it?
Have you, O tired and downtrodden, weary soul, given up already, concluding that the alien government hierarchy will never crumble, will never give way? Have you marched through the hot desert in search of the river, but found only silent sand dunes? Are you about to let the desert take you, and make you part of its past, part of its genealogy? Maybe what you need to do is go the extra mile. You need to stand against the sucker punches till the fists that rise arise no more. You need to truck it farther than you ever did before. But why, why do we always have to exceed the preset boundaries? Why do we fight to achieve peace? Why do we endure to rest? Why give the rushing river a run for its pressure, against the constant high tide and the raging waves of a deep, turbulent sea, against the looming waterfall and the jagged rocks below the cliffs, why do we always have to surprise nature and the elements with our best of the best?  Yes, you are welcome to share with me your unique experience, but I think you know that I know that you know that I know we were made to astound creation. Is there any other explanation, for why the scientist maintains we are prone to using only ten percent of our brain capabilities? What’s the other ninety percent doing, sleeping?
Wake it up! Shake it up! Dish it up the way Mohammed Ali did every time he entered the ring. Those sucker punches? They only sting when you blink.  And so I said to myself, Charly, I said, these candidates promising to take us over the bridge, over the bigger ocean, over the bigger wahala, into the future, how long can they truck it? Have they understood the aim of the game, or are they playing another demo re-run? Do they have what it takes? Are they ready to go that extra mile, and are they ready? Some people need fame and money to procreate; others need status and power to concentrate.
All it takes is for you and me to be ready, and we don’t have to be the next president or vice president to stand out. Care more, share more, be honest and think of every great and good thing you can think of. Well, just do it more. If you have been sitting on tax payers’ money it’s time to stand up and let it go where it was supposed to go. If you are a senator cooling your butt for five minutes twice a year, talking rubbish to collect what your whole village needs to step into the millennium, then go the extra mile, get a bill signed that will prevent you and your kind from crippling the nation.
You’ve got to sacrifice for the dream, and join the People’s Army. Check it out yourself; no race ever made it this far without breaking away from the clutches of sycophants and narrow-minded issues. Germany lost Hitler. America released the slaves and let the plantations rot. Great Britain finally stopped trying to colonise everybody and beat a wise retreat into their own backyard. Ghana called a spade a spade, and because they did they are doing so well today. Name names, browse through the civilisations, you’ll see this rugged road stretch out ahead of mankind like a mathematical formula surviving on the strength of its validity.
You’ll hear foreigners sigh; they’ll shake their heads and say, “Nigeria has a long way to go…” We can’t catch corruption two steps down this road. We can’t see the Promised Land fixed like monuments on this hard cobalt, gazing into the horizon, wondering where this audacious road leads. We can’t keep pretending to be moving, standing still.

Nigerian Woman Sentenced to 80 Years Imprisonment In US

A Houston jury has reached a decision on the sentencing phase of the trial against Jessica Tata, a daycare owner whose home caught fire, killing and injuring several children.
On November 13, Tata was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 80 years in prison.

Tata, 24, left children in a home on Crest Park near Waypark alone with a pan of grease heating on a stove while she went shopping on February 24, 2011.

When she got home, the house was on fire. Elias, Shomari d**kerson, 3; Elizabeth Kojah, 20 months, and Kendyll Stradford, 20 months, all died in the fire. Three other children were hurt.

Jurors took eight hours to decide on punishment. Tata will be eligible for parole in 30 years.
Tata wiped away tears as her attorney, Mike DeGeurin, said the fire and deaths were an accident. He said Tata made a mistake and never intended for the children to be hurt because she loved them.

“She should have called for help or she should have said to herself, ‘I’ll wait until they wake up, change their diapers, I’ll load them up in the car and we’ll go shopping together,’” DeGeurin said. “But she didn’t.”

DeGeurin said that Tata will forever pay, no matter how long she spends in prison, for using bad judgment.

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/11/20-ladies-in-mini-skirts-slaughtered-in-maiduguri/

The slaughtering of about twenty different ladies, our correspondent gathered, took place in the early hours of yesterday precisely at about 1 to 2am when most of residents were still asleep in their houses due to the curfew imposed by state government.

A source told our correspondent that the most hit areas were Mary wards, few meters away from the University of Maiduguri, one of the places accommodating students of the institution living off-Campus due to accommodation shortage.

Also affected according to investigation, were ladies living close to the black spots areas of Gwange, London Chiki, Abbagaram, Kaleri areas where series of killings and bomb blasts had occurred in the past, killing JTF officers.

When contacted on phone, both the JTF spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa and the Police Commissioner, Mr. Yuguda Abdullahi said that they are not in Maiduguri, the state capital to confirm the incident.

But a top JTF Commander said, he had directed his men to the affected areas yesterday morning to evacuate the remains of over twenty girls slaughtered within the Maiduguri metropolis.

N50m bounty placed on Boko Haram leaders

Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force, Operation ‘Restore Order’, Maiduguri, have declared the suspected terrorists wanted and placed a reward on each of them. They are wanted in connection with terrorist activities particularly in the region that led to the killings, bombings and assassinations of some civilians, religious leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, politicians, civil servants and security personnel amongst others. They are also wanted for arson and destruction of properties worth several millions of Naira.

A statement listed 19 alleged senior members of the extremist group blamed for hundreds of deaths in connection with its insurgency in northern and central Nigeria as suspects.

The rewards ranged from N50million for the suspected leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau, to N10 million for various Boko Haram “commanders”.

Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, who issued the statement on behalf of the Military Task Force operating in the region did not respond to phone calls. Violence linked to Boko Haram’s insurgency is believed to have left over 3,000 people dead since 2009, including killings of security forces.

MADNESS!!! [Photos] Nigerian Woman Spends N75 Billion On Louboutins Shoes

What would one person do with 120 Pairs of Christian Louboutin? that's just a brand, not to talk of several other brands of shoes. That's not all, the same person also has in her collection 30 Hermes bags, costing on the average about £5000 each, meaning for the Hermes bags alone that about £150,000 Pounds.

The Louboutins at about £500 each would come to £60,000. That's £210,000 for just 2 brands in the wardrobe of a 28 years old woman, estimated to £300 Million Pounds.
Mind you, the Hermes bags is only estimated at its cheapest, some are between £5000 to as much as £150,000 Pounds. Remember also, that the Louboutins are not the Nigerian type ones. So welcome to Tamara Ecclestone's world.

Most probably if a poll is conducted, its might just reveal that Nigerians wear more Louboutins and carry more Hermes than other nationalities of the world.

I sold human parts to churches and ritual killers – Joshua

November 21st will ever remain indelible  in the heart of Oloko villagers as members of the palace guard to the community leader of Ajara Topa community in collaboration with a vigilante group operating in the area arrested a man who allegedly eats and sells human parts to ritualists, operating from a hole he dug under the Gbaji bridge along the Badagry-Seme border
Joshua Akindele,56, hails from Etokia Local Government in Ogun State was earlier spotted by one Anthony Amos who watched him crawl into a hole under the Gbaji bridge. Joshua confessed that he had been into cannibalism and ritual killing for the past 15 years, after being introduced to the business by a friend who convinced him to stop driving popular motor cycle known as “Okada” which he claimed  profited him a little, but could not sustain him. He further said that he had been earlier sent to prison for 5 years after molesting a 17-year old girl.

Speaking with Crime Guard, Akindele confessed to be the brain behind the incessant killing within the village using  ply woods to hit his human prey, and dragging them into the holes before splitting their parts for food and business… with ritual buyers.
In his statement “I have been in this business for the past 15 years after my friend advised me to stop riding okada and to join him in ritual killing and cannibalism”

When asked how he carried out his activities, he confessed “Whenever I see somebody walking alone without being conscious of who is watching, I walk slowing up to them and use a big ply wood to hit them on their heads after which they fall unconscious, I then drag them into the hole and use a knife to cut them into parts which I sell to some churches and some ready buyers who indulge in ritual killing for easy money, and some times when I feel hungry  late in the night, I eat some parts for food.

He confessed further that he sells the parts as follows: Heads 7,500, breast 1,500, p*****s 1000, hands and legs for 3,500.

Amos who is a member of a vigilante group in the area alerted other members  of the group and palace guards of the Baale of Ajara Topa community to the movements of  Joshua.

He told Crime Guard that at about 1 a.m on 21st of November, he was on his normal routine watch when he noticed him (Joshua) crawling into the hole with a rice bag, he quickly alerted other members who confronted him with a gun and ordered him to drop and open what he was crying. When he did, they discovered rotten human parts;  skulls, legs, hands, breasts e.t.c.

Crime Guard visited the palace of the Baale of Ajara Topa community,  Chief Samuel Amosu Owolabi, who after  confirming the incident told Crime Guard that he was sleeping in his palace when an emergency call woke him with the caller informing him that a man had been arrested by members of his palace guards in collaboration with members of the vigilante group with human parts.

Chief Samuel said he quickly called Chief Patifo , Baale of Iyafin whom his community shared the bridge with to accompany him to the scene.  When he got there, he noticed a mob had begun beating the suspect and only stopped after he begged them to let him live so that proper investigations will be carried out by the police.

Crime Guard confirmed the suspect was in the custody of the Badagry police division from a police source who pleaded anonymity.

Kim Kardashian Shows Off Her Assets In A Tight Leather Legging

Leather is usually not in regular rotation in the average person’s wardrobe, but Kim Kardashian isn’t exactly your average person — except when it comes to the all-too-familiar fail associated with the risky fabric: bunching.
We can’t even remember that last time we've opted for anything leather because the thought of showing off an unseemly gathering in the crotch or rear vicinity is enough of a deterrent for us. Kim, on the other hand, is fearless. The reality star has worn all sorts of leather looks, from mini skirts to leggings to harem pants (unfortunately, those do exist).
Back to the leggings though. Kanye’s main squeeze decided to give those another go on Tuesday while passing through LAX airport. But, alas, the risk didn’t pay off this time. As soon as Kim showed her backside, that sneaky leather decided to ride up in that unfortunate upper thigh area — yikes! We doubt this is what the fashion entrepreneur had in mind.

Check out Kim’s leather legging ensemble below and tell us what you think. Do you wear the fabric or do you avoid it for the same reason we do?

RACISM!!! Mark Clattenburg cleared by FA as Mikel GETS INTO TROUBLE

The Football Association has cleared referee Mark Clattenburg of using "inappropriate language" towards Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi.
But Mikel, 25, has been charged by the FA with misconduct following his involvement in the incident.
The Blues had claimed Clattenburg directed racial language at Mikel in their home defeat by Manchester United.
Clattenburg said it was "truly frightening" to have faced the prospect that his career might be over.

Following the match at Stamford Bridge on 28 October, the FA interviewed Clattenburg, Mikel and several other Blues players before reaching its decision to clear the official and charge the Nigerian.
"It is alleged that in or around the match officials' changing room at the end of the fixture, Mikel used threatening and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour," an FA statement read.
Mikel has until Friday, 30 November to respond. Chelsea have indicated he will not deny the charge but will request a hearing to "explain the mitigating circumstances".

The evidence for Chelsea's allegation towards Clattenburg came from their midfielder Ramires who, when interviewed, explained that his instinctive reaction was to seek confirmation from Mikel as to what the referee said.
Mikel, who was being spoken to by Clattenburg, was much closer than Ramires and did not hear what it is suggested was said to him.

An FA statement also said the complaint by Mikel's team-mate Ramires was "made in good faith".
Clattenburg, 37, has always maintained his innocence and the Metropolitan Police dropped its own inquiry earlier this month.

He missed four weekends of Premier League matches while the FA investigated Chelsea's complaint.
"I am looking forward to putting this behind me and concentrating on refereeing in the Premier League and other competitions," said Clattenburg.
"The messages of encouragement from those inside and outside of the game have helped me through the most stressful time of my professional life.
"To know you were innocent but there was the opportunity for it to wreck your career was truly frightening.
"Racism has no place in football and this experience should not discourage those to speak out if they genuinely believe they are a victim of abuse.
"However, there are processes that should be adhered to in order that any investigation can be carried out in a manner that is fair for all parties involved.

"Chelsea FC has a duty of care, as do all employers, to act responsibly when such allegations are reported by employees.
"We did not take the decision to lodge a formal complaint with the FA lightly and followed the correct processes and protocols throughout."

Referees' union Prospect, on behalf of Clattenburg, are asking Chelsea for a full apology and compensation.
Police dropped an investigation into the alleged comments towards Chelsea's Mikel and Juan Mata in the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge last month.
Chelsea initially suggested Spanish midfielder Mata had also been verbally abused by Clattenburg, before deciding there was insufficient evidence to support these claims.

Saudi Arabia implements electronic tracking system for women

“Why don’t we just install a microchip into our women to track them around?” joked another.

“If I need an SMS to let me know my wife is leaving Saudi Arabia, then I’m either married to the wrong woman or need a psychiatrist,” tweeted Hisham.

“This is technology used to serve backwardness in order to keep women imprisoned,” said Bishr, the columnist.

“It would have been better for the government to busy itself with finding a solution for women subjected to domestic violence” than track their movements into and out of the country.

Passenger Arrested With $320,000 At Lagos Airport

In what seems to be a worrisome trend, another passenger has been arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos while trying to travel out of the country with $320,000.

The Airport Command of Nigeria Customs Service announced the arrest on Monday of the passenger identified as Onwuekwe Anthony Chidi aboard a Qatar Airways flight bound for Doha, in the Gulf region.

Chidi was said to be checking in at the airline's desk, when he declared the money but he was arrested as he could not explain the source of the currency as well as show adequate proof of his business to justify being in possession of such a huge amount.

The passenger and the money have been handed over to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigations, a statement from the Customs added.

According to the statement signed by the Customs Area Controller, Mr. Eporwei Charles, "About 1300 hours on November 19, 2012, a passenger by name Onwuekwe Anthony Chidi, with passport number A04086671, was checking in on Qatar Airways. He declared the sum of three hundred and twenty thousand dollars ($320,000) on both forms CDFIA and CDFIB but could not explain the source of the currency nor show adequate proof of his business to the Customs officer at the currency desk at the 'E' wing departure hall of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos."

Charles said it had become imperative for Customs at the airport to comply with government regulations as it affects foreign exchange in line with the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) CAP C 45 LFN 2004 as amended.

He explained that since September 24, 2012 when the office received a letter from the EFCC, it had put in place a collaborative working arrangement to ensure that officers are vigilant to detect those trying to use the international airport as a route for money laundering.

He added that the efforts have been paying off as many passengers caught were stopped from travelling and handed over to the EFCC.

"On September 27, 2012, two passengers - Mrs Hassan Ganiyat Oloruntoyin and Mr Oteh Prince Eminike - were barred from boarding at the currency declaration desk when they were unable to produce evidence of purchase of $270,000 and $1,040,000 respectively and they were subsequently handed over to the EFCC.
